Attractive black glossy berries form on these amazing plants in December. They contain a cabinet full of medicinal fortitude, and when cooked or processed retain all the goodness of the anti-oxidants unchecked. The skin of a currant is packed with phenolic antioxidents that help prevent cancer, control diabetes, fight degenerative diseases, aid memory loss and are extremely good for rheumatoid arthritis; as well as, acting as a protection against Alzheimer's disease.

So now we all want one but... Can they be grown in warmer areas? Do they fruit in Auckland's climate?

Well mine did last year and we got some doozie frosts! Someone once told me, if the winter is mild, toss some ice cubes on the surface periodically 6-7 times during the season, tricking the plant... It actually works!!

Location can also make a difference. Currants love the morning sun and afternoon shade, so plant on the cooler side of the house or plant under the existing shade of fruit trees. Currants can tolerate winds and are fast growing, up to 2m. They are deciduous in winter and fruit on young new canes of the previous seasons wood. Ideal eaten fresh, added to drinks, jams and sauces, as well as tarts or eaten raw.

'Laxton Tinker' is a heavy cropping disease resistant variety.
