The tayberry is a hardy deciduous berry hybrid which is a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry. Similar in appearance, it has slightly longer, larger and more aromatic fruits than the loganberry. It is also less acidic, more like the blackberry in flavour. Dark red when ripe, they mature through mid to late summer. Lovely eaten fresh , they can be frozen or made into jams.
Reliably vigourous and abundant grower, the fruits are easily picked.
Tayberries grow like other brambles, preferring moderate summers and cooler winters. They like slightly acidic soils (pH 6.0-6.5) loamy and free-draining. They do not like wet feet but require an adequate water supply in summer at fruiting stage. Appply blood and bone when planting and feed with a balanced fertiliser annually in spring.
