Blackberries are just one of the many closely related berry brambles available. Best grown in moderate climate with a moderate summer and cooler winter or seasons that are not overly hot, dry or severely cold, but cold enough for a winter chill. Best planted in deep, slightly acidic (pH 6-6.5) loamy, free draining soils, they will not tolerate water-logged conditions. Blackberry fruits ripen last at the end of summer and beginning of autumn. A general feed with a balanced NPK fertiliser in late spring will see them right. They bear fruit on the wood of the second year canes, so pruning to base after fruiting has finished and tying stronger of the new 1 year old canes will prepare them for next seasons fruiting.
'Karaka' is an earlier variety. It produces large, glossy, black berries, with melt in your mouth flavour. High yields and long season, it is also resistant to dryberry and botrytis. Although they have thorns, the fruits are easy to pick and the canes are also very easy to manage.
