Blueberry is a hardy deciduous ornamental shrub that gets to approx 1.5 metres tall. Stunning autumn foliage colour and small white, it produces clusters of small juicy berries with a slight tart/acidic flavour. In New Zealand, blueberries are catergorised as either highbush, lowbush and rabbiteye; with highbush (Norhtern and Southern) and Rabbiteye varieties most available. Northern highbush varieties are suited to more temperate areas and Southern highbush varieties are more suited to warmer temperate climates and Rabbiteye (late-croppers that can be grown in most parts of New Zealand) requiring pollinators. Blueberries fruit from summer through to autumn (early - early summer) mid-season (mid summer) and late (late summer to mid autumn.) Plant a mixture of varieties for better cropping and longer fruiting season.

Considered a 'brain food,' blueberries are high in antioxidants and fibre, vitamin C, A, E and B; as well as anti-inflammatory properties! They can be eaten fresh, put in salads, desserts, made in to jams, tarts and pies.

Blueberries require a rich fertile, acid loam soil (pH 4.5-5.5) and are best planted in groups at about 1.8 metre spacings and mulch with peat moss. Prune through winter to open plants up to improve fruiting. Fruit occurs on last seasons growth, so strong branches produce better crops. Will produce at least 5kg after 5 years!!
