Elderberry is a small multi-stemmed tree or large shady shrub with a twisted trunk and stem. Known for its medicinal and nutritional properties (rich in iron), it is often found in cosmetics. Perhaps it is best known for wine produced from its large umbels of small black berries and a mixture of water, ginger, allspice and clove. The tree produces creamy white, lacy flowers in early summer, followed by the juicy berries!!

It grows best in a cool, moist, nitrogen-rich, loamy soil in partial shade and is not really effected by climate, pests or diseases. It can also be easily propagated from seed or hardwood cuttings in early winter. Both flowers and fruits are borne on the new seasons wood, so pruning should be done in winter, before the new spring growth.
