A deciduous shrub with attractive red glossy edible berries forming on these amazing plants in December. They contain a medical cabinet full of medicinal fortitude, rich in Vitamin C and also contain traces of Vitamin B, Iron and Phosphorus. When cooked or processed retain all the goodness of the antioxidants unchecked. The skin of a currant is packed with phenolic antioxidents that help prevent cancer, control diabetes, fight degenerative diseases, aid with memory loss, are extremely good for rheumatoid arthritis and aids in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease.
So now we all want one but can they be grown in warmer areas? and do they fruit up here?... Well mine did last year and we got some doozie frosts! Someone once told me, if the winter is mild toss some ice cubes on the surface periodically 6-7 times during the winter, thus tricking the plant... Voila!! It works!!
Also location can make a difference. Currants are wind hardy and prefer cooler climates, they love the morning sun and afternoon shade, so plant on the cooler side of the house or under the existing shade of fruit trees. Currants are fast growing, up to 2m , losing their leaves through winter they fruit on young new canes of the previous seasons wood. Ideal in drinks, jams, tarts and sauces; some prefer them raw!
